Oval shaped cake boards (drums) are approximately 1/2" - 5/8" thick and are measured across the widest point of the board.
Oval shaped cake boards are, roughly speaking, about as long as they are wide and are made to suit professional oval shaped cake tins.
You'll see we also stock the much rarer "in between" sizes of oval cake boards . . . there aren't cake tins made in these sizes, these oval cake boards are designed to allow you just that little more space if you're making frills etc. For example: a 10" x 8" cake tin will produce a cake which would need a 12" x 10" cake board or, if you want that little bit more space, a 13" x 11" cake board.

All our cake boards are manufactured to British Standards in fully licensed, hygienic UK factories. What's more, all our cake boards are sprayed with a microscopic film of invisible, odourless and totally flavourless antibacterial wax which prevents any bacterial growth. This, combined with our own hygienic storage and handling, ensures the safest cake boards available in the UK today . . . simply wipe lightly before use.
Cake drums are normally around 5/8" thick and are made from compressed, sterilised sawdust (surprised?) with proper wrapped edges and white paper underside, designed primarly for heavier cakes, such as rich fruit cakes, offering the strongest and safest type of board. Very strong and very safe, minimising any movement of the icing and perfect for wedding cakes.
PLEASE NOTE . . . all cake boards are traditionally hand finished so please allow a certain amount of variation in accurate size and finish. Small folds, creases, scratches and dents in the covering paper and are all features occasionally found in the hand-finished product and are not considered faults.
